  • Notes
    • Richard was born at home in Sanger, in 1937. As a child, Richard, was well-behaved and always had a sunny smile. A pudgy child, he grew up to be tall and slim, but never lost that smile. When Linda and Jerry were sent to live with grandma Bingham, Richard was left in Sanger with his mother. This was a tragic decision, as she was not well enough to care for herself, much less a small child. During this time he was lonely, and very depressed. Friends of his father, Carl and Gladys Marcella tried to take him to live with them in San Pedro, but his feelings of abandonment by his father, missing his mother and confusion about where he belonged deepened this depression. He finally moved to grandma Bingham's house, but never seemed to lose that feeling of abandonment and it showed in his quiet detachment. Richard grew up to be popular among his peers both in school and in his adult life. When his father died in 1953, Richard was only about sixteen. He continued in school until he was old enough to join the Marine Corps. Richard went to boot camp in San Diego and was then assigned to duty in Alameda where he met his wife, Marlene. At his funeral in 1997, Marlene spoke of their first meeting. She and a girl friend always took a bus home from their job at the end of the day. One day they noticed a tall, good-looking Marine. The next day, they were excited to see him again and the three of them struck up a conversation. When it came time to part, Richard and Marlene paired up, and ended up dating. They dated for some months, in which Richard took instruction in the Catholic faith and ended up converting. After their marriage, Richard finally seemed happy again. They had three beautiful girls who in turn had families of their own: Vicky, Sandy, and Kimberly. Unfortunately, Richard inherited the HD gene and his life changed dramatically with the disease. He was first diagnosed around 1980 and was to spend many years hospitalized. The disease claimed his life in May, 1997. [bakupftm.FTW]
