Notes |
- Donald was born October 16, 1907 in Sanger while his parents were still living on Hoag St.
() A hand-written program for Pine Ridge camp, June 15, 1918, when he was almost ten years old, shows that he was on the program to recite "Thrift Stamp Jingle." Donald played in the Sanger City Band, as did his brother, Bill. Don played the trombone and Bill played the "bones." Once week, during the summer, there was a band concert in city park. There was (and still is) a band shell for the players, and the people sat on the grass or lawn chairs to enjoy the music. Donald was baptized at the First Christian Church, Sanger, CA. April 19, 1922. (Information per letter from current (1997) pastor of church. Letter in possession of Linda Gardner.) He graduated from Sanger Union High School in 1929, along with his sister, Peggy. According to friends of Peggy, Donald graduated two years behind his class as he stayed home to care for his mother. Donald was popular in high school and is mentioned several times in the year book. He was described as "the man of independent mind. He looks and laughs at that." During his high school years, he was in the 1928 operetta, played in the band and orchestra for all four years; appeared in "For the Love of Mike" in his third year; active in Hi-Y; entered the Music Contest in his third and fourth years, was athletic manager his fourth year, and played in the Brass Quintet. Elsewhere in the yearbook, his horoscope offered this: "has an impulse to defend the weak." As graduates, he would will "his place in the orchestra to anyone who could master the trombone, perhaps Joybelle Caine." Right after graduation, he married Helen Johnson, also a 1929 graduate. They had attended school together, and her horoscope said: Helen Johnson, born Monday, August 18, 1911; Virgo, Persistency of purpose, fond of finery. And to her classmates, she willed "her Lyric voice to Betty Scott and Emma Price." In 1926 to 1929, while still in high school, Donald worked in the Sanger Meat Market. This store was located at 920 P. Street, Sanger, and was owned by his cousin, Fred Adams. In 1931 he was working at the Bank of America as a bookkeeper. Helen worked both as a clerk in the J.C. Penny store, and later in Doctor Fleming's office as a secretary. He and Helen divorced, and again according to family stories, due to his having Huntington's Disease. On September 11, 1937, Donald married Mami Flake, whose family was from Del Rey. She also worked at the Bank of America. On November 12, 1940, while living in Raisin City, they had a son, Donald William, who was always called Billy. Donald's father, W.H. contracted to build them a house at 2106 Webster, Sanger, next door to Don's sister, Peggy. Mamie remembers the house to have been a very reasonable price, and had hardwood floors. They lived there until moving to Richmond in 1943. By this time, Donald was too ill to hold down a job, so Mamie worked nights in a shipyard as a welder, in order to be home with Billy in the daytime. Since Don was too ill to care for Billy, a neighbor was hired to serve as baby sitter.
Obituary from the Sanger Herald, which appeared on January 4, 1946 Ill Health Causes Suicide W. Donald Jones, who was born and raised in the Sanger district, died Friday afternoon of a self-inflicted bullet wound. The coroner's office listed his death as a suicide. Undersheriff John Ford said Jones shot himself in the head with a .22 caliber rifle Thursday night. He had been despondent because of poor health. He was 39 years old. Jones is survived by his widow, Mamie, and a son, Billie; a brother Wm. Jones of Richmond; and a sister, Peggy Bingham of Sanger. Funeral Services were held in the Cain and Craeger Chapel Monday with Rev. Bernard S. Davis, pastor of the Christian Church officiating. Burial was in the Belmont Memorial Park.
Donald died December 27, 1945 and was buried in Belmont Memorial Park where he lies with his parents, brother and sister. [bakupftm.FTW]
