Notes |
- () Eleanor was called Peggy from an early age. No one knows why or how this nickname came to be. She was born into a town full of relatives: her grandfather, Sherman Samuel Engle had lived in Sanger for a few years before Peggy was born. His brother, Joshua Engle and his wife Annie lived nearby. Peggy would have grown up with their children. Her Mead relatives: James Walter, Albert (Uncle Joe), Alice, and Norman lived in Sanger. Her aunt Hattie (W.H.'s sister) and her husband, Tom Walton lived in Sanger, then Fresno before moving to Los Angeles.
1920 census Peggy was 9 years old living with her brothers and her parents who were renting W.H.'s mother's house on Hoag Street. 1930 census Wm. H., 50 and Peggy, 19 were living on Tait Street. This was two years after Atha had died. Peggy and her brother Don helped care for Atha, especially after their parent's divorce. Peggy was a talented piano player, and while a teen-ager played for the movies shown at Gustine's, the local movie theater her father built. From her high school yearbook, The Echo, it had the usual teen-age jokes and predictions, such as in her will: Eleanor Jones, she should give her formula for keeping slim to Leo Goslanian who evidently was heavy; Pepys was not more calmly witty, was in the Spanish club her second year, Spanish Program year two; Piano recital, year 3, and served in the Student Store. Horoscope: Contempt for all obstacles and perils. She was popular and well-liked, according to a school friend who communicated with me. After graduating from high school, her aunt Alice paid for her to go to secretarial school, according to a cousin. Not sure how long she went, or how she did. She waited on tables in her brother, Bill's cafe. this is where she was working when she met her husband. Peggy had early onset Huntington's Disease, inherited from her mother, Atha. Early onset meant they could have had signs of the disease at a very young age. High nervousness in the beginning.
