      p. 35D Sherman Engle orphan m s w 11 born: Kansas (parents listed as being born in NJ; should be IN) enumerated as living with Arthur Sharp and wife Mary A., also Ida Williams, orphan.
      Sherman S. Engle was born in Girard, Crawford County, KS about 1868. He married Arnetta (Nettie) Jackson June 28, 1888. After she died in 1896, the children lived with their Jackson grandparents. In 1903 Sherman took Atha and Arthur to Sanger, CA. He signed for his daughter, Atha, to marry in 1905. Some time after that, he moved back to Kansas. The 1910 Federal Census shows Sherman living at the Crawford County Poor Farm as of 23 April 1910. At some time he was removed to Osawatomie State Hospital where he died on Sept. 12, 1911, at age 43. (his age based on him being 21 in 1889) He was buried on the hospital grounds.
      His obituary as it appeared in the Girard Press: ENGLE-At the State hospital at Osawatomie, Sept. 12, 1911, Sherman S. Engle of Girard aged about 45 years. Burial took place at the hospital. 1869 born Girard, Crawford Co., KS
