Atha Hope Engle's name first appears in the Crawford Co., Kansas as a birth record:
6 Nov. 1889, Altha Hope Engle f 1st child born; white; N. Maple St., Cherokee, KS f. Sherman S. Engle age 21 bp Girard: occupation Painter m: Nettie Jackson Engle age 19 pb Wayne Co., Iowa. Her mother's entry in the Engle family bible verifies this date.
Atha was Nettie and Samuel's first child. They would add Dora Mae, born in October, 1891, and Arthur James, born in 1894. Nettie Jackson's mother, Amelia Harris family had moved to Crawford County, Kansas from Wayne County, Iowa where the Harris ancestor, Matthew was one of the first settlers. Matthew had immigrated from England around 1800. Nettie's father, James Jackson came west with his family from Crawford County, North Carolina.
Atha married Sherman Samuel Engle, whose mother, Rebecca Teague also had Huntington's Disease and had died young. His father, John Samuel Engle was part of an early Quaker family that came to New Jersey from Millbourne, Cambridgeshire, England in the early 1600's. This early immigrant ancestor, Robert Engle, married in New Jersey, and left a will which mentioned which his two brothers still living in "olde England."
As generations passed, the Engles eventually moved west with their Quaker extended families: first to Ohio, then to Indiana, and eventually Kansas.
While in Parke County, Indiana John married Rebecca Teague. Rebecca Teague Engle was committed to Osawatomie State Hospital where she died sometime after 1870. It would be years later, in 1911 that her son, Sherman Samuel Engle would also die at Osawatomie with the same disease. They are both buried on the ground of the hospital in unmarked graves.
Sherman was one of four children born the Rebecca and John. Two children, Joshua and Sara both lived long lives, married and had children. Both families moved to Sanger before 1900 and lived close to the Jones and Bingham families. Rebecca's other son Isaac disappeared from the public records. Sherman inherited HD and died at the age of 42.
In 1901 (based on information on Atha's death certificate) Atha's father brought her and her brother, Arthur, to Sanger. Perhaps to be close to his brother, Joshua, and to find a home for the two children. His daughter, Dora had married a cousin, Fred Harris in Crawford County, Kansas and later homesteaded in Pompey's Pillar, Montana near his father and uncles.
As these things happen, neither Dora nor her brother Arthur inherited HD.
However, Atha had early onset of Huntington's Disease, or Huntington' s Chorea, as it was then known. Her three children would all inherit the disease.
Her husband and family thought Atha was just "nervous" and trips to the beach and numerous sanitariums would cure her. Neighbors told of her husband, Bill, constantly nagging her. She finally divorced him shortly before her death, citing his constant criticism. Family members said he still went home every evening for dinner. Atha was finally committed to Fresno County Hospital where she died one day after her 39th birthday. She had a tonsillectomy the day before.
The obituary appeared in Fresno Morning Republican, on Friday, November 9, 1928 and reads as follows:
Private funeral services are to be held today at Lisle Chapel for Mrs. Atha Jones, 38, of Sanger who died in Fresno Wednesday. Mrs. Jones leaves her husband, W.H. Jones, two sons and a daughter, Donald, William and Eleanor Jones and a brother and sister, Art Engle and Mrs. Dora Harris, all of Sanger. She was a native of Kansas.
Atha is buried in Belmont Cemetery in Fresno. William, and the three children rest beside her
